What we do: In Person, Outdoor, Experiential Learning and Practice of Emotional Regulation for Neurodiverse Students in small groups. All programing is designed with COVID 19 safety precautions and we are classified as essential workers.
F+ (Fun/Positive) Programing for Neurodiverse Middle School students is a compassion based emotional regulation and performance coaching program designed to help students with ADHD, Dyslexia, and other neurological differences learn and practice how to focus their attention and regulate their emotions in order to maximize their social skills, academics, and performance goals.
Through high energy and novel hands on games, and activities, students learn to control their emotions and be tuned in and compassionate to themselves and others. We use state of the art, research based, experiential, interactive, multimodal, and fun exercises (plus old school collaborative games) to understand how and why to naturally self regulate. This example training program "camp" outlined here is well suited for small groups of neurodiverse middle school students.
Each day we teach enrichment programing covering the following:
1. Compassion Based Emotional Regulation training and daily meditation practice.
2. Academics: Reading (comprehension and fluency) and Writing
3. Social Emotional Learning
4. Sustained Focused Attention Training
*Pre and Post testing design to be determined.
Duration: 3 weeks, 4 hours per day, 4 days a week with two performance coaches and up to 10 students.

Who we are. Coaches:
Colin Maslan, BA (Sociology & Criminal Justice) and Masters in Social Work from the University of Southern California expected May 2021. Colin is trained in Compassion Cultivation, a Riding for Focus Champion, and former bike mechanic and Emergency Medical Technician.
Lois Prislovsky, Ph.D. (Educational Psychology). Lois is trained in Compassion Cultivation and has advanced certification in Ericksonian Hypnotherapy.

Core curriculum components: Riding for Focus and One on One Performance Coaching
Each day before academics, all students participate in Riding for Focus which is a bicycling program designed as a tool for students to achieve academic, health, and social success by enjoying getting their heart rates up for at least thirty minutes while cycling.
Every week each student will receive, one 30-minute confidential individual session with Dr. Lois (following COVID 19 policies), Detailed session notes encrypted for privacy are emailed to each student's parent's the next day to ensure maximum inspiration, motivation, and goal attainment support and understanding for each student.

Location: Locations vary with group interests and specialty programing but public parks, private land, pump tracks, and school campuses are the norm.

The transformative power of compassion based emotional regulation education on interpersonal and intrapersonal peace and productivity are profound. Dr. Tupten Jinpa, author of A Fearless Heart: How the Courage to Be Compassionate Can Transform Our Lives, states “A compassionate mind is a resilient mind.” Once students learn and practice compassion for self and others and equanimity as their default response, home and school relationships thrive and joyous performance abounds as students are more freed from fear and distraction to laser focus on what they do best.
This camp will combine learning and practicing psychological strategies to grow personal peace and power. Each camp day will be high energy, interactive, and presented in a multisensorial format:

2. One book (available in paperback, e-book, or audiobook) = Into The Magic Shop: A Neurosurgeon’s Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart by James R. Doty, MD. *Participants are asked to please purchase this book by the first week of camp. Many empirically sound books abound regarding compassion based emotional regulation but I find Dr. Doty’s book to be well suited for this four-week intensive camp as it presents a clear peace/performance success story with a practical and generalizable “how to” outline supported by a large body of research. Doty, prescribes and describes:
It is our intention to help students have fun while learning how and why to practice compassion based emotional regulation.
3. Additional but not required research articles relevant to each week’s camp content will be emailed to each participant's family.
4. Weekly guided meditation audio recordings will be emailed or texted to participants each week.
5. Students will receive one, thirty minute private coaching sessions each week with Dr. Lois. These students will receive personal hypnotherapy and guided meditations audio and/or video recordings as desired for their personal goals. Additionally, these private one on one coaching sessions with Dr. Lois are always followed by detailed session notes emailed (via encryption for confidentiality) to the participants the next business day. These notes help students and their families review what was learned and practice the specific changes chosen.
The world needs all kinds of brains. Everyone benefits when we are all empowered to contribute. Finding solutions to previously un-resolved problems, are not likely to come from the same old kind of thinking. Outliers are needed.
Neurodiversity overview and opportunities. Neurodiversity is the fact that neurological differences like Anxiety, ADHD, and Dyslexia, are natural human variations that have real benefits. Diversity brings strength and resiliency to all systems - eco, cognitive, biological, political, cultural, educational, and sports teams.. Research shows there is no gold standard brain. There are two sides of every neurological coin and evidence suggests such brain difference are by evolutionary design and thus serve as valuable specialization trade offs rather than as purposeless breakdowns in function. Traditionally, practitioners have focused on the deficits. Neurodiversity recognizes the challenges associated with each brain style, but focuses on the individual’s strengths to be a part of the solutions.

Anxiety is the most common and most effectively treated psychological condition. The cause and cure for anxiety are the brain and the mind respectively. Once students learn the role of their brain (an organ in their body) and their mind (thoughts which are in their control), they have the tools to manage anxiety.

Fear is needed for courage.
Self-talk: it is unwise to believe everything you think. Consider that most of your thoughts are not your own (original thoughts are rare) as we are flooded with the opinions, values, and judgments of our environment. You may train yourself to think and thus feel only one good thought at a time.
Multitasking myth: Your conscious mind can not multitask. Please consider doing one thing at a time and do it well.

Impermanence is a fact.
Acceptance = resiliency. When we take advantage of the opportunity to change and better ourselves, it takes the hurt out of the change pain.
Attitude is everything with obstacles. Everybody gets tired, but those who arise from suffering and adversity change the world.

Adaptability is key to survival and well-being. Children are usually more flexible and resilient than adults. Why? The answer is child’s play, as science confirms we learn almost effortlessly through play as more brain regions are activated. Opportunities for playful work productivity are discussed. Being consciously immersed in play allows the mind to dance, free of thoughts, and that is when creative thinking is ripe. When our mind is working on what we are not thinking about, our intuition and interconnectedness peak.

F+ = Pronounced “F positive”, it simply means if a choice feels FUN/fascinating and POSITIVE for your-self and as many others as possible, do it. We discuss how to synchronize your talents and intentions. Tune in and know you are on your path when it feels good whether the emotion is exhilaration or peace. Truthfulness is the prerequisite to the F+ paradigm. It does not work as recommended if you are not truthful with yourself and others. F+ is an easy paradigm for living WELL on purpose.
Human beings are capable of experiencing two core emotions, love and fear. All other emotions are derivatives of either love or fear.
